Kapiolani Community College receives $90K grant

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kapiolani Community College recently received a huge donation. The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation granted $90,000 to fund scholarships for students who have completed their first year in the school's Lunalilo Scholars Program.

The program, which was launched in 2012, provides financially at-risk students with a year of tuition. It also provides a support system of mentoring and tutoring throughout a student's first year of school.

“The peer mentoring component of the Lunalilo Scholars Program benefits the new scholars by giving them access to role models that are invested in the program and want to see them succeed,” said Director of the Lunalilo Scholars Program, LaVache Scanlan.

The $90,000 gift was inspired by the Kaneta Foundation, which recently announced a $1 million matching gift challenge to support the Lunalilo Scholars program. So far, $123,450 has been raised through the challenge.
